Wilmington Tourism & Sightseeing

Wilmington Tourism and Sightseeing
Location is a prime factor in Greater Wilmington, Delaware's popularity with vacation travelers. Located on Interstate-95 midway between New York City and Washington, Wilmington can be readily accessed by car, train or plane. Once in Wilmington, discover world class museums and gardens, historic towns that retain their 18th- and 19th-century ambiance, a revitalized riverfront, a year-round schedule of festivals and special events,family-owned wineries and breweries. Enjoy a wide selection of performing arts which includes traveling Broadway Productions at the DuPont Theatre, nationally recognized performers at The Grand plus symphony, ballet and opera or live musical concerts at World Cafe Live at the Queen. Dining options are equally varied; they range from friendly neighborhood bistros to 4-star restaurants. The fact that shopping, dining and entertainment are tax free in Delaware is an added bonus and the hotel tax is less than surrounding areas. Wilmington is also a vacation area that the whole family can enjoy. Take a day sail on the Kalmar Nyckel, a life-size, seaworthy recreation of the Tall Ship that brought the Swedes to Wilmington in 1638. History comes alive at Hagley Museum and Library where E.I. du Pont settled in 1802 along the banks of the Brandywine River and began using its power to produce high quality gunpowder thus laying the foundation for the mighty DuPont Corporation. See the original machinery in operation; watch a gunpowder demonstration; visit the worker's village and find out how children lived and learned in the nineteenth century; tour Eleutherian Mills, the ancestral home of the du Ponts in Delaware, which housed five generations of the family. A world of discovery awaits at the Delaware Museum of Natural History with its life size dinosaurs. Board the Wilmington & Western Railroad, one of the country's oldest operating steam locomotives, or spend time at the Marshall Steam Museum at Auburn Heights for a close-up look at the world's largest collection of operating steam cars. Don't miss the new Delaware Children's Museum or the DuPont Environmental Education Center in Wilmington's Revitalized Riverfront. As far as entertainment is concerned, Delaware Children's Theater tailors its plays to a young audience and the DuPont Theatre presents a full Children's Series every year while World Cafe Live at the Queen hosts a Peanut Butter and Jam on Saturday morning with an all-you-can-eat kid-friendly lunch buffet!
