DescriptionThe Organic is committed to staging bold, relevant productions of classic, contemporary, and adapted works with a permanent group of artists over a sustained period of time. We return to the Greenhouse Theater Center this March for a very special presentation. We bring to the stage the World Premiere of WHY DO YOU ALWAYS WEAR BLACK? directed by Anna Gelman and devised with an ensemble cast.

This is an original work featuring the women of Anton Chekhov’s plays who confront the joy, despair, and absurdity of being a woman in 19th century Russia as well as contemporary America. This innovative, theatrical work weaves together Chekhov’s world and our own modern backwardness, with a healthy dose of radical feminism and sock puppets.

The piece will interrogate the roles women held in Chekhov’s time, as well as the assertion that he or his works were feminist because of the place the plays hold in the classical canon. In this way, WHY DO YOU ALWAYS WEAR BLACK? will examine the problematic aspects of Chekhov’s work, challenge conventions and expectations
