DescriptionA number of Timucuan artifacts are displayed at Fort Caroline National Memorial, headquarters of the Preserve. Fort Caroline commemorates the French Huguenot Colony of La Caroline built in 1564-65 and settled by Rene de Laudonniere. Also, located within the Preserve on Fort George Island is Kingsley Plantation. Built in 1798, this irreplaceable historic structure is the oldest plantation house remaining in Florida. Visitors to the plantation can find remarkably preserved slave quarters, barn, plantation house, kitchen house and interpretive garden all located on the waterfront. Nearby, The Ribault Club provides a unique setting for birdwatchers overlooking the Fort George River. This historic landmark also serves as a gateway to the Timucuan Trail, with a comprehensive museum, complete with video and interactive displays, detailing the island's ecology, history and geography. Recreational opportunities and tours of the ecosystem, wildlife and nature are available through many outfitters, including Kayak Amelia which offers guided kayak and bike tours.
