Description | The Maine Highlands, located at the very heart of the state, encompasses six distinct regions: Greater Bangor, Katahdin, Lincoln Lakes, Moosehead Lake, Sebasticook Valley, and Southern Piscataquis.
Our region is as rich in history as it is in natural splendor. The long standing presence and influence of the Penobscot tribes endures to this day. Early European settlers arrived in the mid-1700s, and by the late 1800s this part of Maine was becoming famous as a vacation and resort destination—the start of a tradition which has grown in popularity ever since.
The many rivers, lakes, and streams afford a myriad of activities, including fishing, canoeing, and whitewater rafting. The mountains are always a hiker’s paradise and the winter trails are a haven for cross country skiers, while snowmobilers take to the Interstate Trail System. Make the most of your visit and leave no facet unexplored.
