| Description | Sinclair Lewis was born and raised in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. Your in "Gopher Prairie", that's what Harry Sinclair Lewis called his hometown of Sauk Centre in his book "Main Street". a book that changed the course of literature by candidly portraying American life when it was published in 1920. The town of Sauk Centre was his inspiration for Main Street, the satirical novel of small-town life that brought him Worldwide Fame. The book irritated some citizens of Sauk Centre, who easily recongnized the real-life models for many of the characters.
Sinclair Lewis wrote 23 novels in his lifetime. Main Street, however was the first of the five big novels that earned him literary immortality. Other books of the "Big Five" are Babbitt, Arrowsmith, Elmer Gantry, and Dodsworth, all written in the 1920's.
