USA Today describes Henry Francis du Pont's Winterthur as one of the country's "...ten great places of historic proportions". Tour the 175-room mansion and admire the unparalled collection of American Decorative Arts on display. Take a tram ride through the surrounding grounds which are the embodiment of naturalistic design. Longwood Gardens is Pierre Samuel du Pont's horticultural extravaganza with over 1000 acres of outdoor gardens and 4 acres of gardens under glass in the Conservatory. Commissioned in 1909 by Alfred I. du Pont and built in the style of a grand Louis XVI chateau, Nemours if open for guided tours. The mansion itself is a breathtaking work of art filled with antiques, fine paintings, tapestries and chandeliers as well as surprises like a indoor bowling alley. Outside, the grounds are filled with incredible sculptures like Houdon's Statue of Achievement and a mix of woodland and formal French gardens reputed to be the finest in North America. Meanwhile, Greater Wilmington offers an array of museums that run the gamut. The Brandywine River Museum features works by three generations of the Wyeth Family including the recently deceased Andrew Wyeth. The Delaware Art Museum is celebrating its 100th anniversary and has an outstanding collection of American Illustration as well as the largest collection of Pre-Raphaelite Art outside the British Isles. Blue Ball Barn, which once supplied the dairy needs of the Nemours Estate, has been remodeled and now houses Delaware's Folk Art Collection. The Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts in Wilmington's Riverfront presents 30 changing exhibits annually of regional and national importance and also provides studio space for 28 artists.
