CategoryMontana Museum
DescriptionHoused in original 1899 and 1909 Chinese mercantile buildings, the Mai Wah Museum is part of the rich multi-ethnic heritage of Butte, Montana. As many as 2,500 Chinese made Butte their home in the early 20th Century, making it one of the largest intermountain Chinatowns in the west. The museum contains more than 2,000 artifacts from the original Wah Chong Tai Mercantile, ranging from boxes still filled with diverse herbs to drums, ceramics, and much more. Hundreds of objects revealed by a 2007 Chinatown Archaeological Dig are on display. The Permanent Exhibit traces the Butte Chinese Experience through interpretation and artifacts--Butte is the origin of the modern game of keno; it started as a Chinese lottery. Noodle parlors occupied the top floor, and there is also middle "cheater" story that the Chinese used for all sorts of purposes.
