DescriptionEST/LA is curating an inspiring variety of mostly world premiere one-act treasures, written by fourteen of their top playwrights. The ONE ACT FESTIVAL this summer will bring Los Angeles audiences a feast of new entertainment. Produced by Co-Artistic Director Roderick Menzies and presented in programs A, B, & C, brimming with provocative drama and comedy.

New American plays from EST/LA’s renowned member playwrights and prominent Playwrights Unit, including Academy Award nominee José Rivera, Garrett M. Brown, Stephen Dierkes, Tony Foster, Wendy Graf, Elizabeth Logun, James Macdonald, Jennifer Maisel, Roger Q. Mason, Eliana Pipes, Tom Stringer, Keith Szarabajka, Mary F. Unser, and Stevie Stern whose play “David Hockney’s Couch” is being staged on a set with Hockney’s actual couch.

“Ranging from funny to gripping, wild to serene, reflective to provocative, we embarked on this one-act festival to celebrate new ideas from our deep bench of talented EST/LA playwrights, directors, and actors. Once we were in rehearsals, I quickly remembered what a powerful form the one-act is, how much can be packed into a few minutes on stage, how swiftly worlds can be created and what a moving, thought provoking, entertaining experience they provide” – Roderick Menzies; Co-Artistic Director and Playwright.

EST/LA Playwrights Unit nurtures the development of new plays by theater professionals and is a gateway to other development programs at EST/LA. Current member playwrights are NYFA, NEA, Guggenheim, Obie, Emmy and Writers Guild Award winners.

Roderick Menzies and Carole Real are the Co-Producing Artistic Directors of EST/LA, a professional theatre company dedicated to developing and producing new work by established and emerging American playwrights, providing a lifelong artistic home to their membership of theatre professionals and sustaining live theatre.
