| Description | In May 2003, Dia Art Foundation opened Dia:Beacon, Riggio Galleries, as a museum to house its renowned permanent collection of major works of art from the 1960s to the present. Dia:Beacon's expansive galleries have been specifically designed for the display, including natural light through its many skylights, of the artworks to which Dia is committed, many of which, because of their character or scale, could not be easily accommodated by more conventional museums. With 240,000 square feet of gallery space, it is one of the largest museums to open in this country since the Museum of Modern Art in the late 1930s.
In addition to the permanent collection, Dia:Beacon also features temporary exhibits, Gallery Talks, readings, concerts, education programs, and more to engage the community and the public in this cultural center. Focused on the work of the artists in Dia's collection, Gallery Talks are one-hour presentations are given by curators, art historians, and writers, and take place in the museum's galleries.
