DescriptionMinuteman Missile National Historic Site, one of the nation's newer national park areas, was preserved and created to illustrate the history and significance of the Cold War, the arms rance and intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) development. Minuteman Missile NHS consists of two significant Cold War sites, the Launch Control Facility Delta-01 and a missile silo at Delta-09. Those facilities represent the only remaining fully-intact components of a nuclear missile field that once consisted of 150 missile silos and 15 Launch Control Facilities. This missile field covered 13,500 square miles of western South Dakota or about the size of the state of Maryland. At the visitor's center at Interstate 90 exit 131, visitors can view either a virtual tour of the missile Launch Control Facility at Delta-01 and the missile silo at Delta-09. Some interpretive exhibits are on display and the site has a junior ranger program for youth. Free tours of the Delta-01 Launch Control Facility are offered daily with
