DescriptionJust 30 minutes north of New York City on the banks of the Hudson River, lies one of America’s most famous Gothic Revival mansions. Built in 1838, the opulent Lyndhurst mansion has been home to New York City mayor William Paulding, George Merritt and Jay Gould. Designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis, Lyndhurst is considered to be a reflection of both the Industrial Revolution and the Romanticism of its era. Anna Gould, the daughter of railroad magnate Jay Gould, inherited the home and donated it to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1961. Today, the mansion serves as an event space for weddings, school tours and theatrical performances, with public tours available on the weekends. Forbes magazine recently named Lyndhurst one of America’s most beautiful mansions.
