Fort Sumter National Monument National Park
Category: Charleston Harbor National Park in South Carolina
Description of this South Carolina Attraction: History provides us with defining moments from which we judge where we are with where we have been. The Civil War provides the United States with one of its critical defining moments that continues to play a vital role in defining ourselves as a Nation. Fort Sumter is the place where it began.
America's most tragic conflict ignited at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, when a chain reaction of social, economic and political events exploded into civil war. At the heart of these events was the issue of states rights versus federal authority flowing over the underlying issue of slavery.
Fueled by decades of disagreement and confrontation, South Carolina seceded in protest of Lincoln's election and the social and economic changes sure to follow. With Fort Sumter as an unyielding bastion of Federal authority, the war became inevitable.
A powerful symbol to both the South and the North, Fort Sumter remains a memorial to all that fought to hold it.

South Carolina Aquarium Charleston's Most Visited Attraction
Category: Charleston Aquarium in South Carolina
Description of this Charleston Attraction: The South Carolina Aquarium, Charleston’s most visited attraction, features thousands of amazing aquatic animals from river otters and sharks to loggerhead turtles in over 60 exhibits that represent the rich biodiversity of South Carolina from the mountains to the sea. The Aquarium is dedicated to promoting education and conservation and offers interactive exhibits and programs for visitors of all ages.
Guests to the South Carolina Aquarium can become explorers in the jungles and rivers of the Amazon, as they encounter the new changing exhibit—Secrets of the Amazon. As guests venture into the exhibit, they enter a replicated researcher’s hut in the midst of the Amazon. Immediately visitors become immersed in an expedition. Lush plants fill the area and sounds reflect the natural environment of this exotic location. Packing crates fill the space along with artifacts, tools and technology used by scientists in the field. A canvas tent looms above and rough cut, weathered wood surrounds the area as exhibits featuring native creatures such as a green anaconda, goliath bird-eating spider, piranha, electric eels, poison dart frogs and a green aracari await. As guests walk around the hut, they discover secrets about the animals, the river and the explorers of this vast region.
10 exhibits ranging in size from 10 to 2,500 gallons are located throughout Secrets of the Amazon, giving the visitor a sense of discovery as they explore the various areas. Graphic panels interpret the animal life, plants and people with each panel divulging one of the many “secrets.” Amazon artifacts such as native jewelry, arrows, headdresses, etc. are mounted throughout the exhibit. Several interactive stations are found in the gallery, including an interactive thunderstorm, test of snake strength and vision comparison to a four-eyed fish.
The South Carolina Aquarium, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to education and conservation, is open daily, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and half day Christmas Eve. Hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. from mid-August through March. Summer hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 1 through mid-August.
