Best Time to Visit Land OLakes Ontario

The Land O’ Lakes Tourist Region is enjoyed by visitors year-round. With the summer months offering the greatest number of accommodation and recreational activities the winter months are becoming increasingly busy with winter activities such as snowmobiling, ATV’ing and ice fishing. The Land O’ Lakes Region encompasses over 5000 water bodies in 9 municipalities in 3 Counties. Summer visitors arrive beginning in May-June. A cottage area, visitors arrive early to open their cottages. This is the catalyst for the opening of many seasonal businesses. Summer is a busy season as visitors enjoy the water sports on the many lakes. The fall colors are exciting as the maples, birches and evergreen provide breathtaking backdrops for photography and sightseeing. Winter sports are varied with some of the best snowmobile trails anywhere. December to March are peak season for snowmobiling , cross-country skiing and ice fishing.

Average Land OLakes Weather

You will find true four-season weather in the Land O’ Lakes. Summer temperatures are warm but not excessive. Our clean air and normal humidity levels make the summer the most pleasant time to enjoy our lakes. Normal daytime highs are in the mid 20’s (C) with nighttime lows in the upper teens. Winter temperatures have normal daytime highs of -5 to +5 C. Average snowfall during the winter varies but usually you can find .5 meters of snow on the ground most of the winter making it great for winter sports.

Transportation

The Land O’ Lakes area is easily assessable by car. Only 3 hours from Toronto and 1.5 hours from Toronto, the highways are hard surfaced and well marked. There are many secondary highways maintained by the local municipalities which are predominantly hard surfaced with some gravel surfaces. The Township of North Frontenac claims to have “the most crooked roads east of the Rockies” making their roads a great attraction for motorcyclists. Their smooth winding and picturesque roads are a major draw for bike cruisers.

In-Season Costs

This area is known for affordable vacationing. You will not find the big expensive hotels here- just the opposite. Inexpensive resorts, cottages, motels, B&B’s and campgrounds are able to provide the tourist traveler with a wide range of accommodation choices at low cost. With 4 Provincial Parks within the Land O’ Lakes, the camper or RV traveler can stay inexpensively for as low as $25.00 CDN per night. Private campgrounds are slightly higher but offer more services. Motel pricing begins at $45.00/room/night and up. B&B’s start at $60/room/night. Many cottages can be rented for prices beginning at $400+/week. Land O’ Lakes has restaurants in all price ranges. Expect to pay at least $20 per person for dinner with wine in a moderately priced restaurant. Many family style restaurants exist with lower pricing as well as a full complement of fast-food outlets.

The Land O’ Lakes Region is known for its variety of activities. Bon Echo Provincial Park is a main attractor for its beauty and children’s programs. The Bon Echo Art Show hosts numerous original artists to display their themed artwork. Excellent canoeing, kayaking and backpacking abound throughout the Park. Bon Echo boasts the largest collection of accessible native pictographs on the majestic Mazinaw Rock which rises 300 feet from Mazinaw Lake- Ontario’s deepest inland lakes at 475 feet in depth. Land O’ Lakes is also known for its huge number of interconnected lakes and rivers making it a paradise for canoeists and kayakers. Many overnight campsites are available for a small fee. Small town shopping is at its best here with the villages of Tweed and Napanee providing an interesting mix of shops.
