Bowling Green, Kentucky Home of the Corvette
Category: Bowling Green Tourism in Kentucky
Description of this Bowling Green Visitor Information entry: Bowling Green, also known as the Home of the Corvette, is located in south central Kentucky along Interstate 65 between Louisville and Nashville and just 30 miles from Mammoth Cave.
The city’s nickname comes from the fact that every Corvette produced in the world today is made at the General Motors Corvette Assembly Plant here in Bowling Green. Free tours are given weekdays where you can see the step-by-step production of America’s favorite sports car.
Adjacent to the Corvette plant is the National Corvette Museum which houses more than 75 Corvettes. Visit the mid-century barbershop and service station, or make a stop on old Route 66 to see the cars that shaped our country’s history.
With cars in mind, Beech Bend Raceway, nationally recognized for its drag strip, also has an oval track for stock car racing. Regular races and national automotive events are scheduled March through November.
Beech Bend Park is a must for families looking for fun. The amusement park offers more than 40 rides, a miniature golf course, go-carts and its newest attraction, Splash Lagoon water park. Its full-service, riverside campground has 500 campsites, many shaded.
Caves run throughout south central Kentucky, but Lost River Cave is the only one that has an underground boat tour on what is claimed to be the shortest, deepest river in the world by Ripley’s Believe It or Not. The walking portion of the tour includes the human history of the Cave and Valley that dates back over 10,000 years. New this year is a butterfly habitat for visitors to enjoy.
If history is of interest, Riverview at Hobson Grove is another place to visit. This elegant interpretation of a prosperous Victorian home displays outstanding Italianate architecture and artifacts of the 1860-1890 period.
Another place to learn about the history and heritage of both Bowling Green and our rich commonwealth is the Kentucky Museum on the campus of Western Kentucky University. This huge museum offers award winning exhibits and exciting traveling exhibitions.
Historic downtown’s Fountain Square, a touchstone to the city’s rich past, offers wonderful dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities.
There are several historic walking and driving tours in Bowling Green that offer the opportunity to learn about our beautiful homes and buildings, the Civil War and our African American history.
Those interested in beautiful architecture should also visit St. Joseph Catholic Church, a German Romanesque styled church built between 1870 and 1884. The church’s interior is said to have been inspired by the cathedral church of Cologne, Germany.
Bowling Green offers a multitude of events throughout the year celebrating everything from our native son, Duncan Hines to international cultures, from all makes of cars to trains!
