About White County
White County, the 123rd county formed in Georgia, was created in 1857 from a part of the original land lot county of Habersham. In early times, the area of White County formed a transitional boundary between the Cherokee and Creek Native-American nations. The county was named for Newton County Rep. David T. White, who helped to attain passage of an act creating the new county. White County’s rich history has prepared its people for the challenges of tomorrow while instilling a strong sense of community and a desire for new opportunities.
Gold was found in White County in the late 1820’s on the Nacoochee River, then known as Duke’s Creek, touching off the first gold rush in the United States. Gold mining operations are still found today along the banks of the Town and Tesnatee Creeks in western White County.
Today, White County abounds with growth in business and industry. The application of new and emerging technologies allows the community to keep pace with the ever changing world. Every day is an adventure in White County, Georgia, where visitors can find over 20 waterfalls, 7 wineries, and 3 State Parks including Georgia's newest Adventure Lodge at Unicoi State Park. Fishing enthusiasts have access to over 333 miles of trout streams, 14 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail with highway access points and over 28 miles of national forest trails. Outdoor adventures are endless from Cleveland to Helen to the historic Sautee Nacoochee Valley.
Nestled in foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, White County has a unique, year-round outdoor playground. From the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River located on Tray Mountain in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, the outdoor adventurers “playground” is created.
Hiking, mountain biking, climbing and backpacking are activities for thrill-seekers in over 40,000 acres of national forest. Smoky Mountain Trader, an Appalachian Trail Conservancy Designated Outfitter, can outfit hikers for walks in the woods or for a 2400-mile trek on the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine! Mountain bike enthusiasts revel at the challenge of the 7.5 mile course developed for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Mountain Biking competition. Professional mountain-bike outfitter, Woody’s Mountain Bikes, provides bikes to fit all skill levels for ages 12 to 60+ to ride more than 60 trails in the mountains. Road biking is very popular; roads go from rolling farmland to the mountains where Tour De Georgia, a U.S. professional cycling stage race attracted professional cyclists from around the world including former professional cyclist Lance Armstrong.
The mountains give rise to springs which flow to creeks tumbling over cliffs and massive boulders. Area waterfalls offer picnic destinations for families or inspiration for the adventurous. Headwaters of the Chattahoochee River pour through the Alpine Village of Helen, Smithgall Woods State Park and high altitude streams where Unicoi Outfitters (2015 Orvis Dealer of the Year’ Award Finalist) are ready to offer days of trophy trout fishing year round. Flat and white water canoeing, kayaking and rafting are available on Smith Lake at Unicoi State Park and on the Rivers as it makes its way south to Lake Lanier.
White County is a part of the first gold rush in the United States (1828); gold and gem panning is a part of the history and mystery of these ancient mountains.
For an aerial view, try zip-lining over rivers, through forests and down mountainsides; challenge your skills with ropes courses and bungee swings. Try rock climbing and rappelling off of Yonah Mountain, a landmark that is rimmed by sheer cliffs.
White County also offers a quieter side of Mother Natures’ playground. Scenic golf courses with manicured fairways are waiting for visitors. Golf Pros at Innsbruck and Mossy Creek stand ready to assist.
Seven wineries comprise the Unicoi Wine Trail and open their tasting room doors to the world. From one of Georgia’s oldest wineries, Habersham Vineyards and Winery to CeNita Vineyards & Winery, which opened in 2015, White County’s wineries offer something for everyone. White County has long been a draw for creativity. You can learn about the pioneers whose struggle to survive in what was then wilderness became the source for beauty and ingenuity at the White County Historical Museum in on the Cleveland Courthouse Square – then browse through our numerous galleries and gifts shops.
The Helen Arts and Heritage Center offers classes, a museum and a number of art shows and events. It is dedicated to sharing local art and preserving the unique history of Alpine Helen.
In Sautee Nacoochee, the Sautee Nacoochee Center has made it a mission to encourage creativity in the area – from poetry to performing arts, visual arts, dance, music and storytelling. Two galleries and two museums are located at the center, but other galleries, studios and gift shops are located throughout the county.
The Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia showcases the handcraft skills of one of the South's premier grassroots art forms, and explores the historical importance and changing role of folk pottery in southern life.

The 173-acre Hardman Farm is located in historic Sautee Nacoochee, just south of Helen. Best recognized by its gazebo-topped Indian mound and cow pasture, this is a favorite landmark in north Georgia. Visitors can make reservations for guided tours of the house and dairy barn. The house, built in 1870 by Captain James Nichols, is a grand example of Italianate architecture and was originally known as “West End” because it was at the west end of the Nacoochee valley. Visitors will enjoy seeing the house, with its 19th-century parlor, original lighting, and interesting telephone and climate control system. The large barn was the focal point of Nacoochee Dairy that operated from 1910 until the mid-1920s. During tours, guests will learn how milk was processed and transported in the past, plus they will see a spring house and former horse barn.

White County is where Mother Nature comes to Play, so the temperatures are always right. With the change of seasons also comes the change of foliage. The flowers and fresh vegetation of the spring gives way to verdant green mountains, which then display the colors of autumn and give way to the quiet grays of winter.
Spring temperatures are cool with averages in the mid 50's and highs in the upper 60's. Nights are cold with lows in the low 40's. Summer temperatures are mild with averages in the low 70's and highs in the mid 80's. Nights are cool with lows in the low 60's. Fall temperatures are cool with averages in the upper 50's and highs in the upper 60's. Nights are cold with lows in the mid 40's. Winter temperatures are cold with averages in the upper 30's and highs in the low 50's. Nights are cold with lows in the upper 20's.
