Area Overview
Steubenville and Jefferson County has an area of 411 miles. Steubenville is where Ohio began. Settlers moved into this region, known as the Seven Ranges, in 1786. The area is rich in history, which is demonstrated by Historic Fort Steuben, the reconstructed fort built on the original site, with the adjacent First Federal Land Office west of the Alleghenies; the City of Murals larger than life art on buildings throughout the city depicting the area's history; the historic and beautiful Union Cemetery; Mount Pleasant, a Quaker village instrumental in the Underground Railroad; and the numerous downtown historic churches with stunning stained glass windows and architecture. Beyond history, the area offers scenic beauty with camping and many outdoor activities available, as well as quaint and charming Bed and Breakfasts. Dining is diversified including the area's own pizzelles and 'square' pizza, along with Greek, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican and American cuisine. Out in the countryside there are unique wineries and restaurants featuring local produce. Steubenville is also home to the world renowned Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Bike paths, hiking trails, golf courses, boating, swimming and tennis courts are all options for outdoor fun, as well as free outdoor concerts in several communities during the summer months. Fairs and Festivals include the Ohio Valley Frontier Days, held at Historic Fort Steuben, celebrating early American life with soldiers, surveyors, settlers and Native Americans; crafts, games, pony rides, music, presentations and Colonial dancing; Dean Martin Festival, a yearly celebration of Dean Martin in his home town with live entertainment, Dean and Rat Pack impersonators, karaoke, food and drinks; Steubenville Hometown Celebration an annual festival featuring music, vendors, food, live entertainment, car show, 5K walk/run, trolley tours, mini train rides, and more; Annual Toronto Festival of the Arts, with food, contests, fun, music, lots of local arts and crafts; Apple Stirrin' Festival, the area's oldest and largest apple festival; and Steubenville's Nutcracker Village, a new and wildly popular magical outdoor display of about 100 life size (6') locally created Nutcrackers along with the Christmas Wonderland and Gift Shop and an Advent Market, featuring food, local artisans, Christmas gifts, hayrides and music.

The Jefferson County Historical Museum located in an old Steubenville mansion contains 19 rooms which exhibit period furniture and artifacts, including a Dean Martin (Steubenville native) Room and the Vivian Snyder Genealogical Library, which contains one of Eastern Ohio's finest collections for family history research. Free concerts are held on Thursday evenings in downtown Steubenville at the Berkman Amphitheater located in Fort Steuben Park from May through the first week of August, and from August through September at The Gazebo in Toronto, as well as other live concerts throughout the area. Local antique dealers may have just the 'hidden treasure' you are looking for.

Rich in history and historic sites, Steubenville & Jefferson County offers Historic Fort Steuben, a completely reconstructed fort built on the original site overlooking the Ohio River. Adjacent to the fort is the First Federal Land Office west of the Alleghenies - built in 1801. Other sites are Mount Pleasant, a Quaker village instrumental in the Underground Railroad; historic Union Cemetery, noted as one of the most beautiful in the country; and the Jefferson County Historical Museum and Library with 19 rooms, including (Steubenville native) Dean Martin Room as well as an extensive genealogical library. Steubenville known as the City of Murals has larger than life art on buildings throughout the city that reflect the area and America's growth, and many downtown historic churches with stunning stained glass windows and architecture. Black Sheep Vineyard is a quaint and curious family owned vineyard on a former sheep farm, open for sipping, snacking and tours. Our lakes and parks offer peaceful encounters with nature, as well as, biking & hiking trails, fishing, swimming, boating, camping and more.
