Area Overview
Nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, Punxsutawney has gained international notoriety as the "Home of the Groundhog". People far and wide come to the town that put Groundhog Day on the map. Punxsutawney is a charming small town that caters to families. Come explore the area by finding the 31 strategically placed whimsical 6-foot-tall Phantastic Phil fiberglass groundhogs. It's fun entertainment for the family. You are also invited to visit the Weather Discovery Center where you can interact with the exciting, hands-on exhibits. At the Center you can climb into the power of a tornado; see and feel the effects of lightning; explore Punxsutawney Phil's Burrow; become a TV weather forecaster; create a thunderstorm and much more. If you enjoy history, the Punxsutawney Area Historical and Genealogical Society offers great exhibits and the most complete history of the area in one location. The Community Center provides current and popular movie presentations on the weekends at very affordable rates and has gym and exercise equipment for your use. The Mahoning Shadow Trail is available to those who want to bike or stroll down its fifteen mile course and take in some of the best scenery and history that the area offers. Take a trek up to Gobblers Knob, where Phil makes his annual prognostication, visit historic and scenic Barclay Square, stop in at our first-class library, enjoy one of our local restaurants for some home cooking. For outdoor enthusiasts, there is golf, fishing, and hunting nearby. Before you leave stop in at Punxsutawney Phil's Official Souvenir Shop and take a souvenir of your visit to Punxsutawney home with you.

Biking, walking and running are available on the Mahoning Shadow Trail that meanders along the Mahoning Creek and past historic cokes ovens. Visit Gobblers Knob where all the action takes place on Groundhog Day. While there, walk the Gobblers Knob trail and enjoy the unique metal sculptures along its path. Golfing is available at Punxsutawney Country Club and at other courses within a short driving distance. Bowling can be found at Groundhog Lanes. The Groundhog Festival, held annually on the week of the Fourth of July, provides big name entertainment free at Barclay Square. The festival is preceded by the annual Firemen's Parade on the Saturday before. Music in the Park in July and August, brings free concerts to Barclay Square every Thursday evening. Groundhog Day is celebrated in February bringing large crowds from across the country and the world. The Gobblers Knob Wine Festival, held in October, showcases the many area wineries and vineyards. The Home for the Holidays Parade welcomes in the Holiday Season on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. You can experience first class fireworks shows on Groundhog Day, the Fourth of July, and after the Home for the Holidays Parade. Many restaurants provide local fare and home cooked meals, a variety of pizza shops abound, as well as ethnic favorites including Italian, Mexican, and Chinese. Current popular movies are shown on weekends at the Community Center Theater at affordable rates. The town has several out door basketball, tennis, and baseball facilities and a community swimming pool. Many unique shops, including a chainsaw carver, jewelry, crafts, books, gifts and souvenirs can be found along with many of the national stores for your enjoyment and convenience. Massage, Spas, and Yoga offer their services to locals and visitors. Sightseeing is a given and in the Fall the sightseeing changes from fantastic to spectacular.

Cultural Activities

Van Dyke and Company provides a dose of culture that is rivaled by few towns of this size. They offer dance classes from modern to classical. Their Mahoning Valley Ballet has produced numerous Ballet performances over the years. It provide first class dance instruction and produces first class Ballets. Live music at the Groundhog Festival over July 4 week and music in the park throughout the summer months keep the music flowing during the warm months. Featured concerts offer top name entertainment in the Fall and Spring. Our Weather Discovery Center is a rare find. Its focus is on the Weather. It is a scientific trip through meteorology and weather broadcasting.

The access to Green Space is one of our biggest assets. We have beautiful wooded hills, scenic streams, intriguing roads and byways, a fantastic rails to trails plus fishing, golf, and hunting. Over the past 20 years we have experienced the birth of many wineries and vineyards in the area. Most wineries are small and run by local residents who take immense pride in producing imaginative, distinctive wines that beckon you back year after year. Our Historical Museum and the Weather Discovery Center provide local history and weather related programs and activities.

This is a small rural town. It does have regular interstate bus service from Trailways that runs daily. There is also the Area Transportation Authority has local service within the town. We have a car rental business in town.

It is great here year round but winter is when Punxsutawney Phil predicts the weather and as such we have large crowds in February. Our Home for the Holidays celebrations attract many in the winter also. Summer provides the best opportunity to enjoy our area. The woods, streams, and local flower gardens and the music in the park and Groundhog Festival provide activities that make a visit here more enjoyable.

We have campgrounds and cabins within easy driving distance. There are several Bed and Breakfast businesses in town and nearby. We currently have two modern motels and are working at bringing our historic Pantall Hotel back on line.
