| Description | HOUSTON, TX…Get ready for YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, a new musical comedy from the creative team of the 12-time Tony Award winning smash The Producers. Described by The New York Times as “a high density of talent, the hardest-working supersize ensemble and the largest percentage of gags per scene,” YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN will be a big hit with Houston audiences when it performs at the Hobby Center (800 Bagby Street) from May 25 – June 6 for two weeks only. Tickets are on sale now.
Based on the Oscar-nominated smash hit 1974 film, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is the wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Mary Shelley classic from the comic genius of Mel Brooks. When Frederick Frankenstein, an esteemed New York brain surgeon and professor, inherits a castle and laboratory in Transylvania from his grandfather, deranged genius Victor Von Frankenstein, he faces a dilemma. Does he continue to run from his family’s tortured past or does he stay in Transylvania to carry on his grandfather’s mad experiments reanimating the dead and, in the process, fall in love with his sexy lab assistant Inga?
Featuring a book by three-time Tony Award winner Mel Brooks and three-time Tony Award winner Thomas Meehan, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman. The show was named Best Broadway Musical 2008 by the Outer Critics Circle Award and won five Broadway.com Audience Awards, including Favorite New Broadway Musical. Tony Award-winner and original Broadway cast member Roger Bart will reprise the role of Dr. Frederick Frankenstein on the national tour.
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN’s raucous score, created by Brooks and supervised by Glen Kelly, includes “The Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and the unforgettable treatment of Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ On the Ritz,” hailed by the New York Times as “TRULY EXHILARATING.”
Clive Barnes of the New York Post called YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, “the Broadway musical at its dizziest, glitziest and funniest” while Pat Collins of MY 9 News declared Young Frankenstein “a monster hit.” Joe Dziemianowicz of New York Daily News “You’ve got to hand it to Mel Brooks! ‘Young Frankenstein’ is big and entertaining, with a terrific cast, high-spirited dancing and spectacular design.”
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is affordably priced from $26 to $75 and will perform 16 shows at the Hobby Center (800 Bagby Street, Houston, TX 77002) from May 25 through June 6. Performances are Tuesday- Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 2 p.m. & 8 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.
