Description | Birthplace of America’s greatest poet, built c.1816 by Whitman’s father. New York State Historic Site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nineteenth century furnishings. Interpretive Center exhibits: 130 Whitman portraits, original letters, manuscripts, artifacts, Whitman’s voice on tape, and schoolmaster’s desk. Tours by entertaining tour guides, audio-visual show, library, museum shop/bookstore, and picnic area. Maps available for auto/hiking tour of beautiful historic West Hills. Air-conditioned Visitors Center and restrooms. All facilities handicapped accessible. Poetry readings, lectures, concerts, special events year round. |
