DescriptionFounded in 1855, the Wagner Free Institute of Science is a National Historic Landmark natural history museum and science educational institution. Its programs include free courses and lectures, field trips and science lessons, and museum tours and public events for all ages. The Wagner's evening courses, led by professional scientists and educators, offer in-depth learning in a range of science fields and about the history of science and technology. Programs for children and families include onsite lessons and museum tours and outreach to local schools and community groups.

The Wagner's Museum holds more than 100,000 natural history specimens, a collection begun by founder William Wagner in the early 19th-Century and expanded by the preeminent biologist Joseph Leidy in the 1880s. The Wagner's building, completed in 1865 and now a National Historic Landmark, is virtually unchanged from the late-19th Century offering an exceptional experience of a Victorian science museum. The three-story Exhibition Hall is filled with fossils, shells, minerals and mounted animal skeletons and skins, all displayed in the original cherry wood and glass cabinets. The Museum is open to visitors Tuesdays to Fridays, 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, year-round. Courses, family programs and special events are held in the evenings and on weekends from September through June.
