Area Overview
Westerville, Ohio is situated in the midst of 6,000 acres of parkland, which includes city parks, metro parks and a Columbus reservoir. Walkers, runners and cyclists can navigate the more than 29 miles of leisure trails, which connect with the larger Ohio to Erie Trail, linking Cincinnati with Cleveland. Whatever outdoor activities you enjoy, you'll find them in one of our beautiful nature areas.
The Historic Uptown District, is what makes Westerville modern and nostalgic all at once.You'll find ice cream shops, coffee houses, artists' wares, and boutiques offering everything from retro dishes to custom jewelry. There are restaurants to satisfy every palate, including Thai, Greek, Italian, a European-inspired deli, a British pub, a bakery and a sweet shop.
The history of the city can be found Uptown as well. Within steps of the shopping district, you'll find the Anti-Saloon League Museum, featuring artifacts and Temperance materials printed by the ASL, which were used to garner support for the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and earned Westerville the title, "Dry Capital of the World." Just west of Uptown is Otterbein University, one of the first institutions in the country to admit women and African American students. The home of one of Otterbein's founders, William Hanby,is a popular tourist spot not only because it was a stop on the Underground Railroad, it was also home to William's son Benjamin Hanby, who composed more than 80 folk songs and hymns including Darling Nelly Gray, a popular song of the Civil War era, and Christmas favorite, "Up On the Housetop."
Another must-see stop is First Responders Park, dedicated to fire, police and dispatch personnel and standing as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on 9/11. In addition to a sculpture called The Crossing by Steve Geddes and Bob Moore, the park features a 2.3 ton piece of steel that once spanned the 98th through 101st floors on the north face of World Trade Center I. The piece was part of the Federal investigation into the collapse of the towers and now serves as an inspirational reminder of the bravery and dedication of first responders everywhere.

Cultural Activities

|
Renowned for its Department of Theatre and Dance, Otterbein stages many productions including plays, musicals and a dance concert for the community in the Fritsche Theatre at Cowan Hall and the Campus Center Theatre each year. The Department of Art displays art by students, faculty, the University collection and visiting exhibits in the Miller Gallery, 33 Collegeview Rd.; Fisher Gallery in Roush Hall, 27 S. Grove St.; and the Frank Museum of Art, 39 S. Vine St. Be sure to visit the rotating Historic Costume Collection on the second floor of Roush Hall, which features garments donated by alumni and friends representing different area’s from history. Permanent exhibits on campus include the Presidents’ Gallery, a historical and artistic display of all the University presidents, on the second floor of Towers Hall, 1 S. Grove St., and the Otterbein History Wall on the third floor of Roush Hall. The Department of Music also offers public performances of opera, symphony, marching band and student choral groups.
The Westerville Symphony, Westerville Community Bands and Westerville Civic Theatre also offer performances each year.

Two Columbus/Franklin County metro parks are in close proximity to Westerville. Inniswood Metro Gardens is a 121-acre scenic botanical garden and nature preserve featuring beautifully landscaped gardens and lawns while Sharon woods Metro Park features four miles of paved leisure trails and three miles of nature trails where walkers,joggers and cyclists can enjoy forests, open fields, playgrounds, picnic areas and year-round programs.

Spring brings the brilliant white Bradford Pear trees to life in Westerville. Pleasant days give way to cool nights in April and May. Uptown Westerville's popular wave petunia baskets make their appearance in late May and reach their peak in July and August. Our summers are frequently hot and our winters cold, but as Ohioans like to say, "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute. It will change!"

Coming in 2017, the eight-story Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center will feature 224 rooms, a restaurant, room service and 20-thousand square feet of meeting space.For now, accommodations can be found at the Red Roof Inn in Westerville and in the Polaris and Easton areas just minutes away.
