Area Overview

Twin City is a charming, historic community in Eastern Emanuel County that is just beginning to realize its potential as a heritage tourism destination. It is also home to George L. Smith State Park where recreational opportunities abound. Several restaurants in town offer classic, home-made, country cooking and Lew's Barbeque, famous in the region, is known as one of Georgia's 100 Best; fine dining opportunities are nearby. For football fans, the local high school, Emanuel County Institute, has a championship team, and from August to December one can enjoy the competition under "Friday night lights." For the sportsman, Emanuel and surrounding counties offer great hunting and fishing, and neighboring George L. Smith, II State Park has the best "pin-ball" kayaking around!

Historic Twin City GA, Inc., an active non-profit with strong membership, sponsors farmers markets and festivals on various weekends. City Hall has a community art gallery with new exhibits each month, and there is a local fine art studio and gallery.

Twin City is a little city with a big history: The city formed when Summit and Graymont -- neighboring, rival, and nearly identical towns got "married" in 1921. Logging established both communities, and train lines were built to move the timber. Changes brought by the Great Depression shifted the commercial center of the area from Twin City to Swainsboro, a move that helped preserve original neighborhoods making Twin City a time capsule for historic architecture. An 1830s log cabin, Victorian cottages, gabled ells, Craftsman, English vernacular, attached front commercial, and Italianate are but a few of the styles that can be discovered as one walks through the Twin City Historic District. Although the trains stopped running and the rails were taken up in the early 1950s, Twin City remains an excellent example of a railroad strip town, and it holds a unique and important place in Georgia's history.

Twin City has a reputation of being "twice as friendly, twice as nice." We hope you'll come for a visit!
