Area Overview

Summersville is a quaint town in the central part of West Virginia and is the home of the state's largest lake, Summersville Lake. There is smorgasbord of activities on the beautiful lake, which sees close to one million visitors every year.

Summersville is also the Gateway to the South, offering white water rafting, zip lining and the New River Gorge Bridge in just a short 30 minute drive.

There are 6 hotels in the area, several campgrounds and cabins. There are also a variety of restaurants ranging from fast food to fine dining. There are several retail shops and many specialty shops, such as the Quilt Shoppe, a popular stop for quilt supplies.

Summersville is accessible from several interstates and welcomes guests to enjoy all the beauty and amenities that the community has to offer.

Summersville Lake is 60 miles of shoreline and almost 2800 acres of water providing a smorgasbord of activities, such as boating, swimming, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing, and even rock climbing. Overlooking the lake is the Summersville Lake Retreat lighthouse, a very unique attraction in a land locked state!

Other activities in the area include hiking and biking trails, Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park, which is the site of a Civil War Battle, Kirkwood Winery and the Isaiah Morgan distillery offering tours and tastings, a nine hole golf course and a miniature golf course and jumping pillow located at Mountain Lake Campground.

Cultural Activities


Attractions

There are several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park is the site of a Civil War Battle that allowed West Virginia to move forward with statehood. There is also a one room school house located at the Nicholas Veterans Memorial Park.

Summersville Lake is a beautiful clear water lake with with visibility at 20-45 feet and water temperatures are 60-80 degrees. It is popular for boating, swimming, kayaking, fishing, and scuba divers.

Kirkwood Winery and the Isaiah Morgan Distillery offering wine tours and tastings and is the home of the annual Grape Stompin' Festival in September.

Also in September is the Nicholas County Potato Festival celebrating food, friends and potatoes.

Transportation

The closest major airport is Yeager Airport in Charleston, WV, which is 90 miles south. There is are rental car companies and the Mountain Transit Authority offers rides to various locations.

Best Time To Go:

Summer and fall.

In the spring, the US Army Corps of Engineers begins to fill Summersville Lake. It is a beautiful time to walk the trails and watch the lake prepare for its visitors. The summer is warm and Summersville Lake welcomes close to one million visitors. The fall is high adventure on the Gauley River as the Corps of Engineers begins to drain the lake, making rafting the Gauley very exciting---to say the least!
