Over the years Tuolumne County has been known as a popular "vacation play land" Once known for its gold extraction and its valuable timber resource, Tuolumne County has now become a favorite vacation spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Nature lovers find a wide range of outdoor activities year around with our abundance of lakes, hiking trails, an alpine ski resort, golf courses, swimming holes, wild rivers and campgrounds. Foodies will love the dining options and local wineries. History buffs will love Railtown State Historic Park in Jamestown, the home of the "Movie Railroad" as well as Columbia State Historic Park, a working gold rush town. Hotels, B&B's, vacation rentals and campgrounds, and resorts ensure tourists have lots of lodging options to enjoy the foothills the mountains and the beauty of Yosemite National Park in both the winter and the summer.

Tuolumne County offers a wide range of amenities for every age group. We have numerous lakes perfect for fishing, swimming and boating as well as hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails. We also have four golf courses, three theatres, a bustling downtown area for shopping and a wide range of dining options. We host numerous festivals, fairs and concert venues each year.

Cultural Activities

The natural beauty of the area is reflected in a thriving arts community. Art associations include the Sierra Quilt Guild, Mother Lode Spinners, Sierra Needle Artists, the Mother Lode Art Association and the Yosemite Artists Guild hold regular annual events highlighting guest artists.

If music is more your scene, you will enjoy the many summer concert series throughout the County, including the Strawberry Music Festival near Yosemite, the Twain Harte Summer Concert Series, and The Jamestown Summer Concert Ceres. The Sonora Bach Festival as well as a local symphony of the Sierras, a brass and reed band and an outstanding jazz festivals series at Columbia Community College are scheduled in the fall.

Tuolumne County is also one of the most popular regional theatre destinations in California and its 3 theatres offer more than 20 plays and over 400 performances each year!

Transportation

Two taxi services are available seven days a week. Tuolumne County Transit has fixed routes on weekdays throughout the County. On Saturdays you can call for advance reservations only. County transit is not available on Sundays. Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System provides transportation to Yosemite in the summer and two airports in the county accommodate lifht aircrafts up to medium twins and small jets.

Best Time To Go:

Summer and fall.

Summers are warm and sunny for hiking, biking, swimming and fishing. Fall is a great time to enjoy the splendor of the changing colors of the trees, winter is great for snow skiing, ice skating and snow shoeing and spring has an abundance of green rolling hills, wild flowers and raging waterfalls.
