Area Overview
Shenandoah County is in the heart of Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley. It is a stretch of land that is nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the East and the the Appalachians to the West. National Forest land covers 26%of the county and the Valley floor is accentuated by the north fork of the Shenandoah River.
Includes Cities/Towns: Basye, Edinburg, Fishers Hill, Fort Valley, Maurertown, Middletown, New Market, Orkney Springs, Quicksburg, Strasburg, Toms Brook, Woodstock.

Outdoor recreation, Caverns, and Historical attractions are our three main areas of interest for travelers. Shenandoah County has 178 miles of hiking trails that wind through the George Washington National Forest. A River Outfitter can take visitors for Kayak or tubing adventures on the North Fork. Visitors can also enjoy the National Forest on Horseback! We have a four season resort which offers Skiing in the winter, but also a mountain bike park, ziplines, golf and much more in the spring and summer months.
To experience spectacular views from a different perspective, take a peaceful balloon ride across the Valley or an exciting jump in a skydiving adventure.

Cultural Activities

Shenandoah County is home to the Shenandoah Valley Music festival which is a Summer concert series with the symphony or big names in Country, bluegrass, folk and rock with a small intimate setting. We have eight different wineries who typically host live music events every weekend. Our local cafes and brewhouses also host local musical talent.
Each small town along route 11 has art galleries featuring regional talent and you can follow along an Artisan Trail visiting artisan studios and agri- artisan farms.
Shenandoah County also has two community live Theatres for stage dramas, comedies and musicals.

Shenandoah County is home to eight different wineries each with their unique tasting rooms which offer beautiful views of the grapevines and mountains. There are two Breweries, one in the center of historic Woodstock, and the other is a Virginia Century Farm which is open seasonally for berry picking and year round operates a brewery and offers farm-crafted sausages.

Shenandoah county is proud to be located within the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District and is a proud partner of the Shenandoah valley Battlefields Foundation. There are many museums, cemeteries and battlefields. most notably the Virginia Museum of the Civil War and New market Battlefield State historical Park in New Market, at the Southern end of the county.

Because we are a small rural community, there is no public transportation such as buses or trains, but we do have rental cars and taxis available and access to small regional airports within a forty minute drive to the North or South. Interstate 81 runs Northeast/southwest through the Valley.

Truly a four season destination, Shenandoah County gets the best of Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall. With spectacular shows of color in the Fall, bold, pink redbuds and tulips in the spring, a snowy blanket covering the mountains in winter, and lush green fields of corn in the summer, Shenandoah County is always beautiful.

Shenandoah County has large chain hotel accommodations with easy access to the interstate but our picturesque byways and back roads can take visitors to unique lodging that ranges from luxurious Bed and Breakfasts to sweet cottages or rustic cabin stays and RV/tent camping.
