Area Overview

Where the River Meets the Redwoods
You want to be here for a long weekend.

Forestville’s unofficial motto is “The Good Life,” and that’s what a visit to the Russian River Wine Country seems to be about: hiking, kayaking, indulgent meals and tasting at acclaimed wineries. Enjoy three wine tasting opportunities within walking distance of each other in town: Joseph Jewell Wines, Jigar Wines, & Wine Guerrill. Just up the road a piece is the enchanting Russian River Vineyards & Restaurant. But while summer crowds descend on the prestigious towns of neighboring wine regions, Forestville remains delightfully low-key, with fewer tourists and more small-town charm.

The town has been on the radar of international travelers since 2013 when the AAA four-diamond Farmhouse Inn made Travel + Leisure’s list of 100 best hotels in the world along with a Michelin Star Rated Restaurant. In fact, Backyard, & Canetti Roadhouse also have been awarded Michelin Honors. These acknowledgements have brought an increase in tourists, but for now, Forestville still feels like a local secret.

Backstory: Established in the late 1860s and named after a local saloon owner, Forestville has always attracted those looking to get away from it all. In the early 20th century, it was popular with Bay Area bohemians, artists and writers, such as Jack London. Back then, orchards stood in for vineyards — those came in the 1960s.
