Litchfield is the best of both worlds. You can enjoy a small-town sense of security and community pride, and Litchfield is only about 1 hour drive from larger regional centers including St. Cloud and the twin cities; Minneapolis and St. Paul. We are located in central Minnesota, we have recreational opportunities as well as provide a great place to work and live.

Recreation & Fitness

Options for Fun in Litchfield include: 18 parks of all different shapes and sizes, archery range, basketball and tennis courts, hockey rink and 18 hole public golf course, as well as bike trails. We have a popular RV campground to enjoy on Lake Ripley, next to Memorial park which hosts a new great playground with bath house. There are several county parks to explore as well. We offer small town festivals in the summer, a historic home tour as well as a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) museum. There is something for everyone.
About an hour drive you can visit Minneapolis, St Paul or St Cloud for shopping at any number of shopping mall and of course the largest shopping mall, Mall of America. For shoppers, there is no tax on apparel and shoes, so get ready to save! You can't miss Minneapolis' arts and culture - with museums, galleries, concert venues and more theatre seats per capita than any city outside NYC, you cannot miss what's on view in Minneapolis.

Cultural Activities

Litchfield has a thriving theatre which offers three events a year. The Public Library is updated with technology and a good selection of books in print. Litchfield offers one of very few Grand Army of the Republic museums in the United States. The Forest City Stockade, (located 10 miles from Litchfield)conducts two events a year with a historical setting from 1862 to memorialize the brave pioneers who settled here and who sought safety behind its wall during the Sioux Indian Uprising of 1862. You can take a walking or driving tour to see the many historic homes reflecting various architectural styles.

Attractions

Summer boasts Thursday Night Pie in the Park. A gathering time for everyone with a different type of music with food options each Thursday, June - August. We have a Community Theatre in its 40th year. In the Minneapolis area you can enjoy live music and theater of every stripe help fill Minneapolis’ performance spaces that boast more seats per capita than any city outside New York. With Tony Award-winners The Children’s Theatre Company and the Guthrie Theater calling Minneapolis home, as well as three historic and two more theaters that make up the Hennepin Theatre District downtown, you will want to find time for some of the 75-area professional theatre companies are performing in spaces throughout the city! World-renowned Minnesota Orchestra and Minnesota Opera companies perform throughout the year just a pirouette away from the Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts. And if rock is your speed, a turn on the floor at First Avenue is required. Art, science and history are on display at more than 55 museums including Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Weisman Art Museum, which have made their marks nationally. With four professional sports teams playing at world-class facilities, there's something for every fan, too.

Transportation

The bus system is operated in a joint powers agreement between Meeker County (Litchfield) and Kandiyohi County (Willmar Lakes region). Major airports are available in St. Cloud (45 minutes away) and Minneapolis/St. Paul International airport (1 hour away). The local airport can accommodate private air transportation services.

Spring temperatures are cold with averages in the low 40's and highs in the mid 50's. Nights are cold with lows in the low 30's. Summer temperatures are mild with averages in the upper 70's and highs in the upper 80's. Nights are cool with lows in the upper 50's. Fall temperatures are cold with averages in the mid 50's and highs in the mid 60's. Nights are cold with lows in the mid 40's. Winter temperatures are cold with averages in the mid 10's and highs in the low 20's. Nights are cold with lows in the mid 0's.

Accommodations

We have two hotels, AmericInn and Knights Inn, we have wonderful campgrounds to enjoy throughout the county within 10 miles of Litchfield. We have a Vacation rental by owner on Lake Ripley which offers many ammenities; Ollie's Landing.
