Recreation & Fitness

Lawrence County offers many amenities for the outdoor enthusiasts. The city and county is home to many golf courses and tennis courts open to the public. Along with multiple public boat launches. Lawrence County has some of the best trout and bass fishing on the Shenango and Mahoning Rivers, Slippery Rock and Neshannock Creeks, Bessemer Lake and Cascade Park. Speaking of parks, Lawrence County is filled with parks complete with walking/hiking trails, mountain bike trials, picnic tables and playgrounds. McConnells Mill State Park is a great area for picnics, rappelling, nature walks and more. The North Country Trails runs through Lawrence County, which you can goes through McConnells Mill. Stavich Bike trail is 12 miles long with 10 of those being in Lawrence County. This is the only trail that travels between two states, two counties and three townships. Living Treasures Animal Park is perfect for all ages - interact with hundreds of animals from around the world. New Castle is the Fireworks Capital of America, which is celebrated every year the weekend after the 4th of July. The county is home to many fairs and festivals every year. Some are Back to the 50's Weekend, Ellwood City Arts, Crafts, Food & Entertainment Festival, Lawrence County Fair, Western PA Balloon Quest, Slovenefest and much much more.

Cultural Activities

Lawrence County has the 3rd largest historic district in PA and it's located on the Historic North Hill in New Castle. Included in the district is Art + Education at the Hoyt - this four building complex offers an array of historic interest with art galleries, classrooms, studios, period house and collection of fine arts. New Castle is also home to the Warner Brothers first every movie theater. Housed in the original building, downtown New Castle, view the museum or stop by to watch some of the first movies shown by the Warner Brothers. Fall and spring.

Summers are warm and sunny for swimming, boating and picnicking. Fall is very beautiful with the colors on all the trees and the Amish Countryside. Winter is great for ice skating, sled riding and ice fishing. Spring is beautiful with it's budding flowers and trees, and cool weather perfect for exploring.
