Area Overview
Hattiesburg, Mississippi is known as the "Hub City". The fourth largest city in Mississippi, it is located in the southern half of the state near the coast. Its central location makes for an easy drive to such major cities as Jackson, Mobile, New Orleans, the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and even Memphis. Hattiesburg is one of several Certified Retirement Communities in the state, and notably was included in Where to Retire's list of "100 Best Retirement Towns in America". There is plenty of shopping at boutiques, outlets, and antique shops; recreational activities abound at our championship golf courses, state parks, and lakes; and dining in Hattiesburg is truly an experience, not simply a meal. Two universities and two major hospitals attract brilliant minds to Hattiesburg, a city where there is always something to do, but with the laid-back atmosphere you expect from the South.

It doesn't matter if you're into the outdoors and want to tackle one of our many premier golf courses, visit the Hattiesburg Zoo, walk or bike on the Longleaf Trace (a Rails to Trails project), or go hunting. Hattiesburg has both a Racquet Club and Country Club, offering tennis facilities, swimming, and more. Maybe you want to stay indoors and shop at high-end retailers, antiques vendors, or catch a show at the theater. A short drive away from Hattiesburg are casinos in Laurel, Mississippi and on the Gulf Coast. There's never a dearth of activities in which to participate.

Perhaps you prefer festivals, like the Mississippi Craft Beer Festival, Festival South (two weeks' multi-arts festival), or HubFest. The arts flourish in Hattiesburg, as evidenced by several fine galleries, our bi-annual Art Walk through Downtown, local theater companies, and free orchestral concerts. Hattiesburg boasts two museums, the Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby and the African American Military History Museum. Special events include the Victorian Candlelit Christmas, symphony performances, and lecture series at our two universities. The University of Southern Mississippi also operates the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning, through which seniors can attend educational courses at and outside of the university, take fitness courses, and participate in other cultural activities.

Hattiesburg boasts a public transport system that runs from Downtown to Midtown, as well as private transport for certain housing facilities and seniors. Hub City Transit provides a special para-transit service for seniors or those with conditions which limit mobility and allow for at-home pick up. The Hub City is also a stop on the Crescent Line for Amtrak, a train line that runs from New Orleans to New York. Hattiesburg is home to the Hattiesburg-Laurel airport, and is a two hour drive from the Jackson, New Orleans, and Gulfport airports.

Hattiesburg has a temperate climate with mild autumns and winters and warm summers. Hattiesburg is inland about 70 miles, so serious hurricanes can affect the area, but Hattiesburg is conveniently placed to avoid most serious disasters. Spring brings an abundance of blossoms, and the city is a top destination for daylily enthusiasts across America.
