Area Overview
One of the larger counties in Wisconsin, Grant County occupies the southwestern corner of the state. The Wisconsin River flows along the northern boundary to empty into the Mississippi, which creates the western boundary. Part of the "Driftless" region of Wisconsin, the terrain features rolling hills and winding valleys. Many streams and rivers create a wonderful environment for anglers with some waterways large enough to accommodate canoes and kayaks.
Largely agricultural, it is not uncommon to see Amish buggies on the backroads and highways. Summer produce stands and auctions provide fresh vegetables and handmade articles for purchase. Grant County is home to five wineries and the Potosi Brewery. There are many locations to purchase a variety of award winning cheeses.Bike trails and ATV routes are available for the outdoor enthusiast. The Wisconsin River is popular with water travelers. Winter provides miles of snowmobile trails.
Our villages and cities offer a range of entertainment and a great selection of restaurants to spend leisure time experiencing. Shoppers can enjoy the plethora of merchandise available from antiques to wine. There are many campgrounds and rental cabins for the visitor that appreciates a quieter venue. Birders, hunters and anglers enjoy our largely rural setting while finding lodging in our motels and cabins. Grant County offers something for everyone's enjoyment.

Boscobel, Fennimore, Platteville and Montfort have bowling alleys. Golf courses can be found in Fennimore, Lancaster and Platteville. Fennimore has an 18 hole disk golf course. Many communities have swimming pools and the Mississippi, Wisconsin, Grant and Platte Rivers offer great opportunity to be on the water. There are movie theaters and many communities have live music in the parks on Thursday nights. The Cassville Car Ferry crosses the Mississippi to and from Iowa during the summer. The Grant County Fair takes place in August at the fairgrounds in Lancaster with 4-H exhibits, carnival rides, tractor pulls and car races. There are museums to visit like the Cunningham in Lancaster, Doll and Toy Museum and Railroad museum in Fennimore, the Depot in Boscobel and the Rollo Jamison Museum in Platteville. If you like beer, the Potosi Brewery is a great place to visit that also offers a museum and a quality restaurant. Rural Route One Popcorn is a unique place to visit for specialty popcorn and a variety of desirable items. Bagley has a rodeo around the 4th of July. Most of the villages and cities hold events and celebrations during the year. Muscoda features the Morel Mushroom Fest on the weekend following Mother's Day. Cultural Activities

Grant County's largest city, Platteville, is home to UW-Platteville. The Center for the Arts is located on campus and offers a 600 seat concert and theater area. Music in the Park can be heard on Thursday evenings during the summer months. The Harry and Laura Nohr Gallery and the Rountree Gallery display works of art.
The Potosi Brewery hosts a Brew Fest in August that brings in thousands who want to sample the wine, beer and cheeses available in Grant County. Lancaster's Blues and Brews feature Blues style music and a great time on June 18. There is always something available for entertainment in all of our communities!

Attractions

Visitors enjoy our beautiful scenery as well as our area attractions. Vesperman Farms, near Lancaster, offers a corn maze and pumpkin patch in the fall that provides family entertainment. Dickeyville is home to the "Grotto", a religious and patriotic structure built in the late 1920's of stone, glass and memorabilia. We have many museums in our towns that offer a glimpse into the past.
Five wineries in Grant County offer theme based wine tours during the summer. With names like "The Great Wine & Chocolate Trail" and "The Wurst Wine Trail Ever", visitors are intrigued by their offerings! Grant County also has two State Parks for camping and hiking enjoyment. Our hills and valleys provide scenery that will satisfy the senses of the bicyclist, motorcyclist, and cruiser.
Weekly Amish Auctions held during the summer provide the opportunity to purchase a handmade quilt, a handcrafted piece of furniture, fresh produce or homemade pie.
Grant County is also home to UW-Platteville and Southwest Wisconsin Technical College.

Platteville, Lancaster, Boscobel and Cassville have airports. Major airports are found in Madison and Dubuque. Some of the larger communities offer taxi services.

Spring is a slow transition from winters grip to cool nights and the deepening greens of new growth. Our summers can be warm and dry, creating the best time to enjoy canoeing our rivers or fishing our clear creeks . The autumn is a moderate temperature time with glowing colors on the hillsides. Autumn is a great time for that road-trip to appreciate nature's pallet of yellows, oranges and reds displayed as far as the eye can see. Our winters can be cold and snowy but if you're a snowmobile enthusiast, it can be the best time of the year!

There are a wide variety of accommodations in Grant County. There are two state parks and several private camping grounds for a great camping experience. The bigger communities offer motels and/or Bed and Breakfasts. Secluded cabins are available in several locations throughout the county.
