Area Overview
Galesburg is the county seat of Knox County. It is the largest community in the county. We are an Amtrak community located on I-74, just 40 minutes from both Peoria to the south and the Quad Cities to the north. Our small airport is home to Jet Air charter service and the home of the National Stearman Fly-in. Our beautiful tree filled city of 32,000 people has a rich history. Our founders were Presbyterians and Congregationalists from upstate New York that were abolitionists. They founded Knox College, a prestigious Liberal Arts college. Knox College hosted the 5th Lincoln Douglas Debate in 1858. The Whitcomb Center in Alumni hall is a wonderful museum explaining the history of Illinois & the US in the 1850s as it relates to Abraham Lincoln. Galesburg is the birthplace of 3 time Pulitzer Prize winning author Carl Sandburg. His birthplace is an Illinois State Historic Site. His book Always the Young Stranger has many stories from his childhood in Galesburg. A rich railroad town in the 19th century, Galesburg has walking tours in neighborhoods filled with Victorian homes.
Includes Cities/Towns: Abingdon, Galesburg, Knoxville.
