Area Overview

The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area encompasses the 91 mile long Flaming Gorge Reservoir with it's 374 miles of shoreline. It is part of the Ashley National Forest and is also surrounded by hundreds of thousands of acres of BLM land nearby for a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. The Flaming Gorge is known for it's Trophy Trout and all around fabulous fishing on the reservoir and Green River below the Flaming Gorge Dam. The red rock on the lake helped give the area it's name when Major Powell made his historic float down the Green River. There are a variety of terrains available to explore including the high desert in Wyoming to the conifer forests of the Ashley National Forest, with red rock, river canyons and sandstone outcroppings. A variety of large and small wildlife can be seen year round and there are many historical museums and visitor centers that explain the unique geology, history and culture of the area. The Flaming Gorge is a great destination on it's own or a brief respite on a National Parks tour!

Recreation & Fitness













The Flaming Gorge is known for it's Trophy Trout and all around fabulous fishing. The Flaming Gorge has held two world record's and currently holds numerous Wyoming and Utah records. The Green River below the Flaming Gorge Dam is a Blue Ribbon fishery with the most fish per mile of any river in the Continental US. You can see the rainbows, browns and cutthroat swimming around in the crystal clear waters.

If fishing is not your bag, don't despair because there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the scenery of the the Flaming Gorge area. Take a tour of the Flaming Gorge Dam, rent a boat and enjoy the water skiing or wake boarding on the lake, raft or hike the Green River, visit the Ute Tower Fire Lookout or the Red Canyon Visitors Center, mountain bike, hike or ATV in the Ashley National Forest, visit Brown's Park and learn about the history and outlaws of that area in the late 19th century. Take a scenic drive and explore the National Scenic Byway or the many Scenic Backways. Accommodations range from tents to Luxury rooms while you explore and enjoy the many activities in Flaming Gorge Country!

Cultural Activities





The Western heritage of mountain men, cattle and sheep are still alive and well in Flaming Gorge Country. Visit the many museums or attend one of the many rodeos in the area including the National High School Rodeo which has been hosted by Rock Springs, Wyoming for the past few years.

Attractions






Outdoor Recreation is the prime attraction to Flaming Gorge Country with the reservoir being the center of most activities. The population is sparse and spread out so you can enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Accommodations and other developed activities are generally clustered in or near the communities of Manila and Dutch John Utah or Green River, Mountain View and Rock Springs, Wyoming. Restaurants and shopping are also clustered in these communities.

This is a rural mountainous area with limited transportation resources, but plenty of beautiful natural resources!

Best Time To Go:

Summer and fall.

The Flaming Gorge Reservoir has a surface elevation of 6,040 feet above sea level when completely full and the mountains tower above the surface level. King's Peak is Utah's highest peak at 13,528' and is west of the Flaming Gorge area, but still in the Ashley National Forest. The Flaming Gorge area enjoys its share of sunshine, but also can have snowy and cold winters. Temperatures tend to be cooler than most other places in Utah. The cooler Water temps can be a bit cool in the early summer season, but are usually quite nice by late summer. Fall is beautiful time to visit the area and see the bright yellows of the aspen trees contrasting the dark greens of the conifers. The Kokanee Salmon turn bright red and can be seen swimming up Sheep Creek near Manila, Utah.

Accommodations


Over 600 campsites are available including boat-in sites and a variety of lodging from bring your own sleeping bag cabins to luxurious rooms, cabins and BnB accommodations. Dispersed camping is also quite popular for those who have self contained campers, trailers and RVs. House Boats and floating cabins are another option available in Flaming Gorge Country.
