Area Overview

Denton, Texas, just a short 30-mile drive from Dallas and Fort Worth, has experienced a great revitalization of their downtown area. There really is something for everyone, with varied dining options, more than 25 music venues, two universities and plenty of local events. Denton not only has a robust community calendar, but also has a direct connection to the Dallas metro area (including the downtown Dallas area, the American Airlines Center and both DFW Airport and Love Field) through the DCTA A-train.

Things to Do

Recreation & Fitness

Denton is most well known for its robust music scene. There are more than 25 music venues, which feature everything from country to classic rock to rap. The nearby University of North Texas boasts the first jazz music school in the country (established in the 1940s) and has produced such well-known musicians as Don Henley, Roy Orbison and Norah Jones.

The University of North Texas has a new football facility, Apogee Stadium, where the Mean Green light up the scoreboard on Saturdays. Both UNT and nearby Texas Woman's University also have basketball programs, in addition to many other intercollegiate teams.

For those looking to get out and get active, pick one of the terrific parks in the city limits, or make the short drive to the Greenbelt trail, which offers hiking, biking, equestrian and canoeing and kayaking. There are also nearby lakes, Lake Ray Roberts and Lake Lewisville, that offer fishing activities.

Cultural Activities

There is a strong music scene in the area, as well as a dedicated arts community in Denton. There are many art galleries that boast roving exhibitions, outdoor music fests several times a year (including the revered Denton Arts & Jazz Festival every April), lecture series with the universities and the Courthouse on the Square museum. There are three primary theater troupes in town: Music Theatre of Denton, the Denton Community Theater and the Sundown Collaborative Theatre. There are also three library branches in town.

Attractions

Denton has activities for almost every type of gathering. For parties with children, the nearby Frank Buck Zoo offers a day of activities, plus Lake Ray Roberts State Park (just a short drive from Denton) boasts many outdoor activities, including hiking, biking and water sports. We have two outdoor swimming pools, the Civic Center Pool and then Water Works Park, which has a lazy river, a wading pool and several water slides.

Denton County is also the home of the most horses of different disciplines in the world. We have guided tours of the North Texas Horse Country six times per year (on the first Saturday of March, April, May, October, November and December), as well as information on taking self-guided tours of the horse country.

For a more adult crowd, we currently have one operating craft brewery, Audacity, that offers tours on Saturdays. More craft breweries are currently working to set up in Denton. We have museums (including one that showcases the gowns of the First Ladies of Texas) and every Friday and Saturday night are our Ghost Tours of Denton, which gives the history of the downtown area, along with details on potential haunted venues (reservation required).

Transportation

There is a public transit system (DCTA) that operates six days a week, with buses that cover most of Denton (including going to and from both college campuses) and a commuter train that goes to Dallas (connecting to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system).

Best Time To Go:

Spring and fall.

Winters are typically less cold than farther north, with mild temperatures and few winter events (ice, snow) per year. Summers can be very hot and dry. Fall usually extends far beyond Thanksgiving. Spring is the most beautiful time of year, with blooming trees and usually an abundance of rainfall.

Accommodations

Denton is beginning to be noticed as a wedding destination, so there are many different options for hotel accommodation. In addition to the standard hotel/motel fare, we have the Old Irish Bed and Breakfast (adults only accommodation) and the Wildwood Inn for bed and breakfasts. We also have three different RV resorts (and a few of the motels do offer RV parking).

Denton also likes to try to accommodate visitors with four legs, so we do have a handful of pet-friendly hotels (additional charges may apply).
