Area Overview

Old time and bluegrass music rings from the mountains to the valleys. Hiking and biking on the New River Trail, floating and canoeing on the New River, Matthews Living History Farm and festivals featuring music, antique vehicles and the state BBQ Championships make our area worth a visit. Multiple antique shops, craft brews and wines add to the charm of our downhome area.

Recreation & Fitness













Hiking, biking and horseback riding on the New River Trail gives you the opportunity to cross former railroad bridges and through tunnels all while traveling along Chestnut Creek and the New River. Canoeing, kayaking, and floating down the New River. Hiking in Grayson Highlands State Park to see the wild ponies and pick blueberries is a long standing tradition. Take time out for one of our music jams each evening or visit one of out outdoor festivals throughout the summer.

Cultural Activities





Take a class in the traditional arts at the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts. The school has a three building campus in downtown Galax offering classes from traditional music to pottery and woodworking. Along with these classes you can also learn to quilt, make felt hats and silk scarves. Old Cranks Autocar Museum offers you a look into the past in the automobile industry. Matthews museum will take you on a tour of the history of our area.

Craft brews and local wines offer you a break from your day of outdoor adventure, museums and a festival or two. New River Trail State Park, Grayson Highlands State Park and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area offer you the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Best Time To Go:

Summer and fall.

Summertime temperatures are normally in the 80's during the day and drop to the 60's & 70's at night. We do have an occasional day that the temps get into the 90's in late July or early August. Fall temperatures are generally in the 70's and low 80's during the day and drop into the 50's at night. The colors in the mountains are stunning in the fall of the year.

Accommodations
