Things to Do

Recreation & Fitness

The weather in Birmingham is generously comfortable, which is one smart reason golfers come here from around the world. The other reason is the lure of handsome and challenging public golf courses. With the development of the state’s Robert Trent Joes Golf Trail, Alabama became the Godfather of Great Golf.
It also is essential that visitors explore the historic Birmingham Civil Rights District. The civil rights drama of the 1960s in Birmingham played out on the world stage. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is the focal point of the district, with interactive exhibits tracing the rise and success of the Civil Rights Movement in the South and beyond. Across the street is Birmingham's most famous civil rights landmark, the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, site of the infamous 1963 bombing that killed four little girls.

Local Flavor:

If there’s one particular activity that’s favored over any other for visitors to Birmingham, it likely is dining. Excellent chef-owned restaurants are plentiful around the area, from high-end dining in the posh suburb of Mountain Brook to one of the South’s longest steam tables at Niki’s West. Few cities can claim a better cluster of top-notch dining rooms than in downtown Birmingham, where they are all practically within walking distance of each other.

Cultural Activities

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra, based in Birmingham, runs a full schedule of performances year 'round with a permanent conductor and guest conductors from around the country. The Alabama Ballet, also in Birmingham, presents a year 'round schedule of new, dramatic and popular performances. More than a half dozen live theater companies play to packed houses throughout the year, and art shows highlight the talents of local and regional artists. The Birmingham Museum of Art is one of the region's greatest cultural blessings, along with museums and educational facilities such as the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
