Area Overview

The Amana Colonies are one of the largest National Historic Landmarks in the USA. Beginning as a communal society in search of religious freedom these German immigrants first settled in New York prior to moving to Iowa in 1855. The Amana Colonies boast a unique German heritage, seven scenic villages, numerous museums, a wide variety of shopping, arts and crafts along with locally made wine, handcrafted beer and delicious food products. The traditional family style meals served in most of the restaurants are not to be missed and the quality of handcrafted products made in these quaint villages is amazing. Furniture, woolen goods, and art are some of the offerings. Live theater is available during most of the year and the many festivals feature a variety of different cultural aspects of the Colonies and their heritage.
