There is a compelling link between the arts and mental illness that has been anecdotally observed for centuries. Does the archetypal tortured artist create despite or because of their affliction? Our exhibition Touched with Fire explores that link in a provocative and exciting way through the visual arts. The works included in this exhibition were created around the theme of the mental health, some of which were inspired by personal experiences.

Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. Touched with Fire begins during the month of May for Mental Health Month. Partnering with Bridgehaven Mental Health Services, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to this organization. Through this juried group show we hope to educate the public, fight stigma, and raise awareness of recovery services that support those touched by mental illness.

An abstract, evocative scene plays out in Andrew Murray’s painting, “Scream, Then Set Yourself Free.” Cheree Federico’s “Intrusion” may refer to unwanted, persistent thoughts characteristic of many mental disorders such as OCD, depression, body dysmorphic disorder, ADHD, and PTSD. A functional piece created within a fine craft tradition boasts a deeper conceptual depth in Alan Mill’s “Press on Regardless;” the wood and ceramic candle set features an accompanying dish displaying powerful words such as “anxiety, fear, and worry.” While many of the works in the show feature an individual or exemplify an autobiographical tone, Kathryn Lipsitz’s encaustic piece “Trois Visages” brings to mind images of brain scans to highlight diagnostic tools and the science of psychology. The title of the show pays homage to the book “Touched with Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and Artistic Temperament” by Kay Redfield Jamison.

There is a great range of artistic interpretation by over 30 artists residing in 8 different states. Works in this exhibition greatly vary in subject matter and media, such as: painting, encaustic, watercolor, ink, charcoal, polymer clay, metal, photography, ceramic, wood, plaster, digital, and mixed media. Touched with Fire will be displayed at Kaviar Gallery from May 19th through August 6th with an opening reception held May 27th from 6:00 - 9:00PM during the F.A.T Friday Trolley Hop!

While this show features works by artists from all over the country, many of the works are by local artists in the Louisville area. The face of a young woman overlaps an early 20th Century portrait of the artist’s great aunt. Jacquelyn Marie Hamilton created this highly personal work by juxtaposing a self-portrait over that of “Aunt Treva” who was sent to live in a sanatorium in 1915. “Inside the Experience of Addiction” is the culmination of a local collaboration by artist, Keith Auerbach and poet, Bill Smith. Artist and educator, Debra Lott, is exhibiting a striking charcoal drawing exemplifying the isolation and intrusive nature of mental illness on an individual level. Lucretia Beatty is showing a colorful oil painting; “Sunshine Today” is an uplifting abstract work that reminds us that there are good days to look forward to.

Kaviar Gallery currently represents over one hundred artists, some of whom will provide new work for the exhibition. Located on Frankfort Ave in Clifton, the gallery is filled with many fine arts, crafts, jewelry, fiber works and furniture. Owner Craig Kaviar, who is a renowned sculptor and blacksmith, is an advocate of Louisville arts and an avid believer in the importance of celebrating local arts and crafts.
