Significant Civil War battles occurred in and around Springfield, leaving in its wake the Springfield National Cemetery and eventually Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. The nation’s first recorded “Wild West Era” shootout took place on Springfield’s Park Central Square following the Civil War.
