Springfield, Missouri rests atop an ancient plateau, surrounded by rolling hills and offering an interesting mixture of metropolitan amenities, scenic natural beauty and a vibrant history. Springfield, also known as the Queen City of the Ozarks, has had a noteworthy history. Significant Civil War battles occurred in and around Springfield, leaving in its wake the Springfield National Cemetery and eventually Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. The nation’s first recorded “Wild West Era” shootout took place on Springfield’s Park Central Square following the Civil War. Early in the Twentieth Century, a name was needed for the route that would connect Chicago to Los Angeles; On April 30th 1926 Springfield, MO became the birthplace of Route 66 as officials converged in the city and decided on a name.   Skip to Best Time to Visit.
