DescriptionLocated ona seven-acre wooded site, the Museum has a commanding view of Discovery Passage (an active shipping lane running between Campbell River and Quadra Island). The forested site offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities, displays and interpretation and has exciting summer programs and educational programs through-out the year. As you begin your tour, you are greeted by the Thunderbird while entering the First Nations Gallery: explore the rich cultural traditions and dramatic art forms including an enchanting narrative on the "Treasures of Siwidi". Follow the changes brought about by exploration and colonization as you walk through the Transitions gallery. Resurface in an interactive exhibit of unique working methods and coastal lifestyles including Pioneering, Logging, and the Salmon Industry. When you've tried counting the rings of an old-growth, examined bunkhouse conditions and climbed on the old Logging truck, enter the Curtis Brothers' Pioneer Cabin. Hop on board the Float house replica to see just how economical families travelling the coast from logging camp to logging camp had to live - the young settlers' abode is quite cozy and charming in comparison! Reaching 'civilization', step into the Willows Hotel (originator of the town's early development) where, on some afternoons, you can view a magic lantern show or hear "Mrs. Thulin" play the pump organ. Then you can follow the lure of Sports fishing and the history of the Tyee Club, including a display on pioneering conservationist and sportsman Roderick Haig-Brown (1908-1976). His family home, on the banks of the Campbell River, is now a Heritage Site dedicated to preserving the author's influence and legacy; available for touring (when not housing an 'author in residence' or running as a B&B). Finally, in the comfortable Van Isle Theatre, sit back and enjoy a number of film choices, including footage of the legendary Ripple Rock explosion of 1958, CBC's first coast to coast broadcast and the world's largest, non-nuclear, man-made explosion. The Museum also has a Changing Gallery which offers special exhibits that revolve throughout the year.
