 | Dalton, GA - Dalton, Georgia - long known as the "Carpet Capital of the World" is beginning to make a reputation as a vacation destination for history and railroad fans. For travelers that love history and the Civil War, Dalton is a great homebase to study Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Northwest Georgia is home to more Civil War sites than any other location outside of Virginia. Dalton is also close to a variety of Native American historical sites including both of the Cherokee National Capitals - New Echota & Red Clay. In nearby Chatsworth is the amazing Cheif Vann House built in 1802 and home to 2 generations of Cherokee chiefs. For railroad fans Dalton is quickly becoming "the" destination in North Georgia. The mainlines for the CSX and Norfolk Southern railoads run directly through downtown Dalton and actually cross each other in front of the train viewing platform at the Dalton Freight Depot and Visitors Center. Also, in Downtown Dalton you can dine in the historic 1852 Western & Atlantic Depot home today of the famous Dalton Depot Restaruant. Enjoy train wathcing as you dine from an extensive menu. Just north of Dalton in Tunnel Hill is the historic 1850 Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel. Built completely by hand and 1,477 feet long the tunnel was the first railroad tunnel in the south. Today, you can take a guided tour through its entire length and listen for modern trains that pass only 100 feet to north in the modern tunnel completed in 1928. Dalton is also home to dozens of bicycle trails for both road and mountain biking. Hiking trails such as the Pinhoti and Disney are just a mile or so form most of Dalton's hotels. Dalton is located just south of Chattanooga, Tennessee and 1 hour north of Metro Atlanta along I-75 at Exits 333 & 336. With dozens of wonderful hotels and dinning options all within walking distance to each other along I-75 and Walnut Avenue, Dalton is a great place to stay and see all of what North Georiga and East Tennesee have to offer.
