Description | Frederic Gilbert Bourne, president of Singer Sewing Machine Co, commissioned Ernest Flagg to create a "hunting" retreat in the 1000 Islands for his family. Singer Castle, known as the Towers was completed in 1905. This 28-room granite castle with elaborate five-story clock tower conceals secret passages and metal grates where servants or residents of the day could spy on visitors. Today, guided tours are held during the late spring through early fall. The castle had all the modern conveniences for 1905 including electricity from a generator, telphone system to call from room-to-room, one of the first sky lights, elaborate pulley system to raise and store boats and heated squash court. The castle is situated on the seven-acre Dark Island and is only accessible by boat. Tours leave from Morristown and Alexandria Bay. |
