| Description | The Sedona Heritage Museum is housed in the Jordan home, orchard and fruit packing sheds; listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A few blocks from Uptown Sedona, the Museum focuses on the pioneer history of the greater Sedona area, including the early families, ranching and cowboys, almost 100 movies made in Sedona, Forest Service local impact, and the local fruit orchard industry. The rock fruit packing shed houses Oak Creek Canyon's first fire truck and the Jordan's mechanized apple sorter. For visiting families there are kids' activities. See the Museum's web-site for program calendar of special events. The red rock home and fruit packing shed sit in a city park, above the Uptown area with magnificent views of Sedona's rock formations. The almost 5 acre park has picnic tables and a walking trail. The park is open dawn to dusk. |

 Excellent! | Ventured to this place after reading good reviews. Right off the main street of Sedona, this cute little museum is a treasure. Plenty of parking and inexpensive (was $5 pp instead of the $3 mentioned on the site). The volunteers were helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Plenty of cool artifacts and pictures showing the early settlers, the family who lived in what is now the museum, cowboy culture and Sedona in the movies. You could spend hours here, if you wanted to. There was also a cute gift shop. Outside, there were several barns and a cabin to look at. The largest barn had a great peach picking machine and an antique fire engine. Had a dress up area for kids (although we adults had fun with it too!) and several videos to watch. Surrounded by beautiful red rocks of Sedona. Would highly recommend this place. | Middle age female | 01-15-11 |
| Excellent! | When you approach this museum, you see an old home with green grass and trees and beautiful Sedona red rocks in the background. Walk inside the front door, and just like any living room, you see family photos on the walls! Unlike just ANY living room, you see family photos of many pioneers of Sedona, and you learn from the greeter at the door that they all knew each other and many of their grandchildren today still do. In fact, the glass cases that grace the living room contain donated antique treasures from these grandchildren that their ancestors used on a day-to-day basis. You are standing in one of their homes--the Jordan home. They started the apple orchard business in Sedona, which helped keep folks employed during the cattle ranching and farming off season.
You move on to the next room, the kitchen, and now you really feel like you are experiencing family in the pioneer way. You imagine your grandmother cooking up a batch of fried green tomatoes or homemade tortillas, and everyone sitting down at the dinner table after a long day of very difficult chores, donned in work clothes or school clothes. This is an experience that modern-day museums often lack, feeling the American family dream of old that built the Southwest.
Ah, but then there's the movie room, I LOVE the movie room! This is Hollywood done right--when stars like John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara and Jimmy Stewart were considered great American icons, not to mention good role models. So many wonderful films were made with the pristine backdrop of Sedona's rugged, yet breathtaking red rocks. There is a huge list, and they weren't ALL westerns! Even Elvis starred in one of them. But the best part yet is the next room, where they showcase the many locals who took small roles as sides (and sometimes not so small) in almost all of these films. This is where the Sedona pioneers not only made the best of their "off seasons" of employment by making a few extra bucks, but they enjoyed it, and got to see themselves in the movies right alongside some of the big guns!
There are a few rooms that also feature educational materials and videos, etc. of geographical nature such as the mountainous regions of Sedona and why the dirt is red, among other things that are interesting to many. Schoolhouse features decorate an antiquated classroom setting where you can just see all eight or nine students in all eight grades being taught by one teacher. It's amazing.
But on your way out the back door to see that awesome barn with the original apple sorter that was re-assembled to its original working condition, with play pioneer clothes for the kids to try on, PLEASE don't miss my favorite stop of all. That would be the GIFT SHOP!!
The museum gift shop has the art work of locals, as well as crafts, woodwork, music, and writing from them! It also has these things from people all around the world that features Sedona as its theme. There is something for everyone here of every age. There is even a book that lists all the movies that were made, with photos!
