DescriptionWe invite you to visit the Litchfield Grand Army of the Republic Hall, a rare and carefully preserved building that is a memorial to the Civil War Veterans. The G.A.R. Hall, one of the very few left in the nation and the only complete original one in Minnesota, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Designed by a post member to look like a military fort, the hall was built in 1885 and was immediately deeded to Litchfield MN to be a Memorial Building when their generation was gone.

The hall has been preserved as nearly as possible in its original condition. Large framed photographs of early post members gaze solemnly from its walls. Battle maps and paintings offer visual testimony to the ordeal these veterans survived. The furniture, the altar and organ and even the color scheme are the same as on the day of the post's last meeting. Another intersting aspect is that many members were part of the 1862 Dakota Indian War, which began in this very county.

Behind the G.A.R. Hall , a two-story addition houses the Meeker County Historical Society Museum. Added in 1961, youll find much information about history of Meeker County. Check out the Dakota Indian artifacts, an early log cabin, a blacksmith shop, household implements, early clothing fashions, tributes to United States Veterans, and more. Guests from near and far have been excited by the great amount of history available just one hour west of Minneapolis.

Your site is very informative, but I have a question about the statement that the GAR Hall in Litchfield is the "only authentic one remaining in Minnesota." I'm not sure what is meant by "authentic", but there are actually TWO GAR Halls in Minnesota. The other one is in Grand Meadow, which is south of Rochester. It is much humbler than the Litchfield structure. It has been turned over to the Mower County Historical Society. Elderly female05-28-09
