| Description | Walk the perimeter of a now-dry sinkhole, which, 26,000 years ago, trapped Ice Age mammoths. Stand on the edge of discovery, viewing the fossil remains left in the ground and displayed in-situ. Both Columbian and woolly mammoths bones exhibited. Visit the Muller Exhibit Hall to learn about mammoths and the other animals (giant short-faced bear, camels and wolves) that roamed across the Great Plains thousands of years ago. Open year round with guided tours. Hands-on exhibits, walk-in mammoth bone hut, life-sized mammoth replicas, free "Sandbox Scientists" area for kids, Jr. Paleontologist Dig (reservations required, 605-745-6017), unique gift shop and extensive bookstore. Plan to spend two hours or more at the Mammoth Site to take advantage of continuously running video and the “after the tour” invitation to leisurely view the sinkhole for that second look and photo opportunities. You'll never forget The Mammoth Site! The Mammoth Site is a non-profit 501-C-3 Corporation and Equal Opportunity provider.
