| Description | The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft’s mission is to support and promote excellence in art, craft, applied arts and design.
The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft provides a platform to explore materials, techniques, and artistic expression. Our goal is to educate and inspire while promoting a better understanding of art and craft through exhibitions, collaborations, outreach and the permanent collection. The Museum will continue to forge alliances within Kentucky, regionally, nationally, and internationally in order to participate in a broader conversation about art and its role in society.
Founded in 1981, the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft (formerly Art and Craft Foundation) was started as a dream to build interest in our state's rich craft and art resources. Seeds were quickly sown for the Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation to continue to develop and eventually have a physical presence in Louisville.
In 1984 the organization moved into the lower level of 609 West Main Street for retail and exhibition space. At that time, West Main Street was very deserted, yet the importance and popularity of the organization exploded.
In January of 2001 the organization purchased two adjacent buildings at 715 and 717 West Main Street in the heart of Louisville's West Main Street Historic District. Built in the 1880's the building is a four-story cast iron structure with a beautiful pastel facade and giant windows. After renovation, the facility provides us with 27,000 square feet of interior space in which to operate, spread over four floors and a lower level. This is an increase from the 10,000 square feet we used to occupy at 609 West Main Street.
The Museum annually offers large-scale exhibitions in its three gallery spaces as well as highlights from its permanent collection. KMAC’s exhibitions and programming attract visitors on a daily basis as well as record crowds for special event nights and on monthly trolley hop nights.
Approximately 25,000 children in Kentucky, Southern Indiana and the surrounding region annually benefit from KMAC’s unique education programs. Over 30 Kentucky artists teach in-depth workshops and residencies for youth each year, most of whom have multiple factors that place them at risk for academic success. In 2010-2011, KMAC reached over 100 schools, libraries and community centers with art education programming that included field trip workshops and gallery tours; artists-in-residence programs; hands-on workshops; community center programs; summer craft camps; teacher in-service training sessions; Traveling Craft Art Education Suitcases, and art workshops for adults.
KMAC’s Sales Gallery store features Kentucky-created work that include ceramics; glass; metal; fiber; wood; jewelry; painting, and folk art. The Sales Gallery is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Kentucky Arts Council’s “Craft Marketer of the Year” in 2009 and 2006, and Finalist in 2008.
KMAC’s Corporate Sales Department coordinates KMAC artists and other team members with businesses in projects large and small, from inception to completion. Recent art installation partnerships include Norton Brownsboro Hospital, Kosair Children’s Medical Center-Brownsboro, and the University of Louisville Health Care Outpatient Center.
The Gallery Shop features the work of approximately 200 artists at any one time, offering work in all media from folk art to furniture. The Gallery Shop offers corporate gift sales and free gift-wrapping, will work with artists and clients on commissions, and will ship to all corners of the globe.
