DescriptionFrom December 1, 2022, to January 19, 2023, the Broward College South Gallery will showcase the works of Dionne Polite in her first art exhibition - KALEIDOSCOPE: My Culture, My Pride.

Polite is a self-taught artist who hails from Guyana. As a young child, she danced, painted, and indulged in many things that fed her creativity. In the early 1970s, Polite and her family immigrated to the United States, settling in New York. After the move, she stopped engaging in many creative pursuits she once loved to concentrate on the responsibilities of being the oldest child. She returned to painting again only a few years ago as an adult. At first, it was a way to connect with her aging parents and, later, to help her grieve through their deaths, which happened within the same year. Her artwork reflects her culture, history, and childhood experiences in Guyana and daily life here in South Florida. With paint, she tells her story her way.

"I am a self-taught artist who sees myself as a dynamic, ever-evolving, layered being, navigating through life while seeing and being in full color," said Polite. "Therefore, with the amazing love and support of my family and friends, I am energized and determined to explore, create and display the kaleidoscope of my life through my art."

Dionne Polite is AARP Florida's Director of State Operations. In her position, she oversees and manages all outreach initiatives, engagement opportunities, and education efforts for over 50 communities across the state. She has received multiple recognitions and honorable mentions for her commitment and outreach efforts.

Named one of Miami's Most Powerful and Influential Black Leaders for South Florida 2019 by Legacy Miami Magazine.
Sits on the Miami-Dade Board of Elder Affairs and the Broward College Foundations Board of Directors.
Member of Leadership Florida's Class 36.

KALEIDOSCOPE: My Culture, My Pride, will be open to visitors from December 1 - 16, 2022, and will open again after the holidays from January 9 - 19, 2023. There will be a reception and an artist talk on January 18, 2023, from 2 - 4 p.m. Entrance to the gallery is free and open to the public.
