DescriptionIn response to many requests, Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum located just north of Montgomery has extended its hours of operation to allow access to visitors on Saturdays through October 29. Colorful crepe myrtles and other flowering trees and shrubs in combination with brilliant summer annuals make a perfect floral backdrop for the statuary displayed throughout the gardens. Previously open only during spring blossom season March through May, Jasmine Hill is thought by many to be even more beautiful in the summer. Tourists travelling through Alabama often request a chance to come see “Alabama’s Little Corner of Greece” and the new hours will allow them to do just that.

Perennial and annual flowers are rotated in all displays to assure fresh flowers at all times. The hot, dry summer days require an enormous amount of irrigation to keep plants healthy and growing, but the gardening staff has been successful in maintaining the amount of color seen everywhere along the native stone walks. Ben and Mary Fitzpatrick who envisioned the gardens surrounding their cottage home began planning for something to be in bloom at all times when they entered into their project in 1928. Since that time, it has been the goal to use many native plants which offer colorful and often unique blossoms. Ginger lilies and other fragrant flowers also fill the air with pleasant scents during the summer months.

As the world begins to think about the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, plans are being developed for lighting the Olympia Flame at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece. Jasmine Hill has the world’s only full-scale reproduction of the Temple of Hera ruins. In addition, the façade of the Visitor Center is the world’s only reproduction of how the temple looked before it was destroyed by earthquakes in Greece. An interesting 3-D card produced in Greece and now on sale at Jasmine Hill changes with a slight move of the wrist to show in one instant how the temple originally appeared and how it now looks in ruins. Next year we will be able to watch on television as the lighting ceremony takes place.

Each visitor to Jasmine Hill receives a printed walking tour map to help them identify statuary and gain helpful insight as to its significance. Greek reproductions show the development of statuary from ancient works to the classical and totally realistic Hellenistic statuary. Guided tours can be arranged for groups of 20 or more. In fact, the gardens can accommodate group tours at any time during the year. Hours for individual visitors are Saturdays from 9 AM to 5 PM. AAA, military and senior discounts are available. Jasmine Hill is located at 3001 Jasmine Hill Road, Wetumpka, Alabama.
