DescriptionJoin us at the League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery on Sunday, June 23rd, 2024 from 10:30 am – 4:00 pm for a Hummingbird Ornament Needle Felting Workshop with juried artist Libby Mortensen.

Needle-felting uses special barbed needles to transform wool fiber into felt and can be used for 2-dimensional works or sculpted 3-dimensional pieces. Different types and colors of wool, and other fibers are utilized to produce the effect desired, resulting in a range of fun simple forms to more realistic creations. You can get a good start with a little knowledge and some basic tools.

What to expect: You will be making your own life-sized hummingbird (about 3” long) to display as a hanging ornament. Practicing basic wool sculpting techniques, including wrapping and shaping, blending colors, and surface felting, we will aim for completing one hummingbird in class —leaving you with enough supplies to make a second one at home. You will also be learning about basic tools, felting surfaces, gauges of needles and their best uses, and types of wool best suited for needle felting. Experience is helpful but not necessary.

Who should attend: Beginners and Experienced Felters are welcome. Ages 15 and up.

About the Instructor: Libby Mortensen is a Fiber Artist who has been needle felting since 2012 and enjoys passing on her knowledge and experience to students. She is a juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen and her detailed wool sculptures are sold through the League and at Exeter Fine Crafts.

Tuition is $45.00 per student with a $20 materials fee paid by cash or check to the instructor on the day of class. An optional toolkit (pad and needles) to take home if desired will also be available in class for $10.

Materials fee includes:

Wire and wool needed for two hummingbirds, including core wool, several surface colors for details, including some special sparkly fiber and curly wool “locks”.
Enough supplies to complete your first hummingbird in class and another like it at home.
A variety of tools needed will be supplied for each student to use in class. If you have your own felting pad and needles bring them along. An optional toolkit (pad and needles) to take home if desired will also be available in class for $10.
Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

Those who wish to take the class MUST sign up by Tuesday, June 18th .
