| Description | Founded in 1913 by Miss Ima Hogg, the Houston Symphony is one of the oldest performing arts organizations in Texas. In the decades since its founding, the Houston Symphony has grown into one of the country's major orchestras with a full complement of concert, recording and touring activities.
Each year the Houston Symphony performs approximately 170 concerts for more than 350,000 Houstonians. The season includes classical concerts; the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pops at JOnes Hall series; the Weatherford Family Concerts series; holiday concerts; the Chevron Fiesta Sinfonica Familiar and the Houston Chronicle Dollar Concert; a summer series at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and free performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Education and outreach are vital to this orchestra: 40,000 students from public, private, parochial and home schools attend Discoverer and Lollipop concerts and every summer the orchestra tours the region with 15 free Sounds Like Fun! concerts reaching 13,000 Houstonians. The Houston Symphony Community Connections program takes musicians into the community individually or in ensembles to perform more than 200 events, reaching approximately 15,000 people, each season. |
