Description | Nestled along the banks of the Petaluma River and chartered in 1858, Petaluma is one of California's oldest and most picturesque cities. Located just 32 miles north of San Francisco, Petaluma is the southernmost city in Sonoma County. The well-preserved Historic Downtown area is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, Petaluma's iron-front buildings and architectural gems of the late 1800s house one-of-a-kind boutiques, locally owned galleries, and more than a dozen antique stores. The Petaluma River offers watercraft recreation that the whole family can enjoy. It's all walkable with plenty of free parking every day of the week.
The Historic Downtown area is also the backdrop for multiple festivals throughout the year including Butter & Egg Days in April, Art & Garden Fair in July, and two Antique Fairs held in Spring and Autumn annually. The Butter & Egg Days celebration harkens back to a time in Petaluma's history when the community was known as the "World's Egg Basket."
Petaluma stays true to its agricultural roots and offers quality, locally-made ingredients that can be savored in Petaluma's award-winning restaurants. Be sure to pair your meal with a glass of wine from Petaluma's very own wine region.
